Personal History: Adora's page on the wikia

Personality: Adora was raised in a place called the Fright Zone, and that name alone should ring some warning bells. She was raised as an orphan to be a soldier from infancy, and never had anything we would recognize as a normal childhood. She was raised by a dark sorceress who served as a deeply manipulative and cruel paranetal figure in her life. She is a deeply troubled woman who struggles with the scars of her past constantly. But, she also has a bone deep sense of morality and personal responsibility. This is what let her move past her upbrining. She grew up thinking her life was normal, but once she got a taste of what life was like outside the Fight Zone she knew that she could never go back and be complicit in the atrocities her people were comitting, even if it meant turning against everyone she ever knew. This struggle is, in fact, the impetus of the plot of the entire show.

Her upbringing has left her with a certain militaristic mindset. She deals with normal person problems by approaching them like a military campaign. Gather intelligence, scout out opposition forces, build up a plan of action to most efficiently get what you want, then engage and hope your plan doesn't fall apart on meeting the "enemy". It works for planning a battle, so why shouldn't it work for planning your appearance at a formal dance? She's also startlingly ignorant on a lot of aspects of civilian life. When she first defeted from the horde, she didn't know what an aunt was. She had never seen a horse. She had never been to a party. She had never tried food that wasn't a highly processed ration bar. She's come a long way since then, but there are still occasionally holes in her worldview that people from a more well balanced life might find strange.

Adora is naturally honest and straightforwards. She prefers direct solutions to problems, and isn't comfortable with deception. She's bad at lying or acting, and doesn't like cheating. Though there was a black market of luxury goods from beyond the Fright Zone in the Horde (mostly food), Adora was one of the few people who never took advantage of it, sticking to the bland ration bars that Horde soldiers usually lived on.

Regardless of what kind of environment Adora finds herself in, she gravitates towards the top. She is naturally competitive and feels comfortable in a leadership role. She has a knack for coordinating groups, especially in combat situations. She has a deep drive to take action in any situation, which is intense enough that she has trouble relaxing even in the best of circumstances. She'd rather be DOING something whenever she can. Even the comforts of not living in a spartan style barracks anymore sometimes leaves her uncomfortable. When she first moved away from the Horde, her new friends gave her a room with an enormous pile of luxurious pillows and blankets for a bed, but she traded it out for a much smaller cot because she found all that luxury and extravegance offputting.

Her upbrining within the Fright Zone as a soldier of the Evil Horde left Adora kind of messed up in the head. In the Horde, it's unwise to show weakness of any kind. When you're sick, you hide and keep to yourself until you get better, so no one can take advantage of you while you're weak. You don't let others see your true feelings towards the people you care about, because that could be a weakness they could exploit. Adora has trouble admitting she can't do something, because she hates seeming weak in the eyes of others. She sleeps lightly, and often with a knife under her pillow that she has been known to lash out with when woken up unexpectedly. She knows, intellectually, that she doesn't need to live like this and that it's a deeply unhealthy way to live, but it is still hard to undo a lifetime of habit.

Even more than that, though, Adora's upbringing with Shadow Weaver left deep scars. Shadow Weaver was the closest thing Adora ever had to a mother, and she taught her that only the strong will be rewarded, while the weak will be discarded as irrelevant. Shadow Weaver made everything a competition and showered her with praise whenever she did well, while criticizing all her mistakes. And Adora deeply craved Shadow Weaver's approval, because what child doesn't crave their parent's approval on some level? Adora never really even noticed that Shadow Weaver generally favored her over Catra, so blindly seeking that approval. It wasn't until she defected to the Rebellion and was able to see how Shadow Weaver treated Catra from the outside, so to speak, that she really started to understand how unhealthy their relationship had been.

And you can't talk about Adora without talking about Catra. Adora is madly in love with her, but while Horde upbringing left her well equipped to fight and survive, it didn't really give her any idea how to really love someone. She had NO role models of a healthy relationship, and was constantly told not to open herself up to others and leave herself vulnerable, so she smothered that burgeoning love for most of her life. The hardest part of leaving the Horde was that Catra didn't want to come with her. Throughout most of the series, she keeps trying to get Catra to switch sides and join her and to keep their friendship alive despite being on opposite teams. It wasn't until Catra showed she was willing to literally let the world end just to spite her that Adora cut herself off from her. And even then, the minute Catra showed a sign of remorse for her actions, Adora IMMIEDIATELY turned around to go throw her life on the line to save her.

Not...that Adora has any problem putting her life on the line. She's a soldier through and through and not afraid to risk her life, but Adora goes above and beyond bravery and up into a full on martyr complex. Adora feels responsible every time someone else gets hurt and she could have, in ANY way, MAYBE have prevented it. She takes on as much responsibility as she can so that others don't have to. She leaps upon the most dangerous role in any mission because she'd feel guilty if someone else took it and uses the incredible power She-Ra gives her to justify it. She constantly pushes herself beyond her limits because she feels like she has to. She constantly puts her own life and happiness as a secondary priority to whatever the current crisis is. Which is good, on some level; If Adora hadn't worked at it so hard, the universe probably would have been destroyed. But, it comes at a cost. Adora constantly pushes the people she cares about away from her when she needs them the most because she doesn't want them to get hurt on her account.

Key themes: Rejecting the familiar when you realize it is morally wrong. Self-discovery and growth. Never giving up on people who want to change for the better. Learning to value your own happiness.

Main Motivation: Doing what is right no matter how hard it is. Self-sacrificing for the greater good. Catra.

Skills: Combat skills - Adora grew up being trained to be a soldier. She is in very good physical shape, knows how to fight with several weapons (her most favored weapons appear to be sword or quarterstaff) or unarmed, and is generally pretty self-sufficient and able to take care of her own physical needs no matter how harsh the environment. It's never really SHOWN, but it seems likely she also knows basic first aid and how to conduct simple repairs on machinery, as these are skills a soldier would be expected to have.

Leadership - Adora is shown to have a talent for leading and coordinating others, especially in battle. She was chosen to be a leader of the Evil Horde's armies, and also often the one commanding in the field after she defected to the rebellion.

She-Ra - She-Ra is a sort of guardian spirit of Etheria, and has been hopping bodies for milennia, granting her abilities to whoever she deems worthy, and Adora is merely the most recent person to recieve this power. Adora can transform into She-Ra at will, although being distracted or unfocused makes it harder. She-Ra is an eight foot tall superwoman in white and gold armor who can survive in hard-vaccum, leap dozens of feet into the air, and lift tanks over her head with little difficulty.

Magic Sword - She-Ra is armed with a magic sword that appears when Adora transforms. The sword can shoot blasts of energy and transform into a variety of other useful shapes (shield, staff, net, grappling hook, coffee cup, just to list a few examples).

Aura of radiance - She-Ra glows, most of the time. Especially when she's feeling super pumped up, or while Adora is first turning into her. It ranges from a faint glimmer to blinding rays of light.

Healing powers - When Adora transforms from She-Ra back to herself, all her wounds are healed, although this leaves her exhausted and she still feels a sort of phantom pain of the injury for some time. She can also, as She-Ra, heal others of wounds or corruption/poisons. This is also pretty draining and she couldn't do it to more than one or two people without running out of energy, but it's a power she can fall back on in an emergency.

First Ones literate - Hundreds of years ago, the First Ones colonized the planet of Etheria and left powerful and advanced artifacts all over the planet before vanishing mysteriously (they were killed by Horde Prime). Now, no one left on Etheria knows how to read their language, except Adora. She had it downloaded into her brain, apparently, when she first became She-Ra, and is the only person in the show who can read First One writing. Also, she is a First One herself, though she didn't know it until she was a grownup. I can't imagine any of this will be terribly relevant.

Item: Adora has a snazzy jacket that she is fond of, though I think it would be kind of funny if it got recolored to whatever her team color ends up being.
